Youth Opportunity – Phase II
Project Status
The Youth Opportunity – Phase II project, implemented in partnership with Education Above All (EAA) and Al-Amana Microfinance, aims to enhance economic opportunities for young entrepreneurs aged 18–35 in Morocco who face limited access to traditional financial resources. The project seeks to empower youth to establish or expand income-generating ventures, thereby improving their livelihoods and those of their families. Special attention is given to marginalised groups, including women and youth in remote areas.
To overcome financial barriers, Al-Amana Microfinance provides tailored microfinance loans to youth-owned micro and small enterprises (MSEs), complemented by a Credit Guarantee Scheme (CGS) supported by EAA Foundation. This scheme covers up to 50% of delinquent loans, enabling the institution to lend to higher-risk youth entrepreneurs, while also providing insights into repayment challenges and the effectiveness of training and mentorship.
The project integrates a holistic skills-building approach, including financial literacy, entrepreneurship training, and mentorship programs for over 5,800 selected young entrepreneurs. In addition, market linkages are created by connecting youth with suppliers, distributors, and potential customers, expanding business networks and opportunities for growth. Enterprise Development Training ensures young business owners can manage and scale their enterprises effectively.
Youth Opportunity – Phase II aims to unlock USD 180 million in micro-lending for over 180,000 previously underserved young entrepreneurs, contributing to the creation of over 250,000 self-employed and employed individuals, including 70,000 new employment opportunities, 40% of which are for young women. The project spans multiple economic sectors, including agriculture, services, manufacturing, tourism, and ICT, fostering inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.
Aligned with Sustainable Development Goals, the project directly contributes to SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), while indirectly supporting broader community resilience and long-term socio-economic impact.
