EAA Foundation Condemns Attacks on Government Schools In Bangladesh

Calendar icon

Education Above All Foundation, a global foundation for education and development, strongly condemns the arson attacks on five government schools in Netrokona, Bangladesh, four of which were serving as polling booths, ahead of the country's elections.

The deliberate targeting of educational institutions represents a grave violation of children’s right to safe and uninterrupted education and underscores the urgent need to uphold and strengthen commitments under the Safe Schools Declaration, which calls on governments and stakeholders to protect students, educators, and educational facilities from attack.

Maleiha Malik, Executive Director of the Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict (PEIC) Programme at the Education Above All Foundation, emphasised that schools must remain safe spaces for children and communities, not sites for deliberate attacks, violence, or intimidation.

Any act that endangers schools, whether during conflict or political transitions, threatens not only physical infrastructure but the fundamental right to education. Educational institutions must never become targets or collateral damage. We call on authorities to ensure accountability and to strengthen measures that protect schools, students and educators.

Education Above All Foundation urges all parties to respect the civilian character of schools and to take immediate steps to prevent further attacks that jeopardise the safety, dignity, and continuity of education.
