In the fourth installment of the Occasional Paper Series, Educate A Child (EAC) and FHI 360 delve into supporting vulnerable children, the most at risk of dropping out of school, to persist in education. “Reducing Risk Factors: Helping Children Stay in School” outlines some of the characteristics that appear to be critical to retaining these children.

Though much of the current research on retention focusses on in-school factors, our work suggests that for the children the hardest-to-keep, it may be out of school factors at issue. To that end, this Occasional Paper provides an in-depth literature review on risk factors, inhibiting full participation in primary education, anecdotal evidence from the field and possible courses of action to redress these dynamics.
