Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

Background

On the 9th of September, the world will come together to mark the first International Day to Protect Education from Attack. This International Day comes at a time where the world is confronted with an unprecedented global health crisis. Additionally, armed conflicts, forced displacement, climate change induced disasters and protracted crises have disrupted the education of 75 million children and youth globally, and that number is growing, exacerbating existing inequalities due to COVID-19.

#UniteToProtect, a Global Campaign to Protect Education from Attack, has been launched with the aim to end the impunity for education-related violations of international law and to create a strong ethos built on global justice, bringing the need to strengthen mechanisms for the protection of education to all private and public agendas.

This guide contains how to join the Campaign, key messages, content suggestions and relevant data on education under attack to support your advocacy to #UniteToProtect.

Key Messages

Education is the lifeline to recovery, and it must be protected at all costs, especially from attack or threat of violence.

Education-related violations of international law must be held to account.

As members of the global community, we each have a role to play to protect the futures of learners. We must unite to protect them from attacks on education.

Education is a necessary step to achieving the UN Global Goals for sustainable development, resilience and global peace. Communities are empowered to play a key role in achieving economic development, self-reliance, future peace and mitigating the burden of conflict.

How to #UniteToProtect

We are pleased to invite you as a key ally to join us in the Campaign to raise momentum and rally towards the important agenda of protecting education from attack. Through the month of August, we hope to get connected and stay engaged with you and your community and amplify our voices on this crucial agenda.

We encourage you to record a 90 seconds video message and/or engage with us on social media platforms with creative content from your respective grassroots communities.

  • Through your video message, please tell us what the establishment of the International Day to Protect Education from Attack means to you and your community; and 2) what actions you view as the most crucial to protect education from attack.
  • Creative content could be from activities such as sports, art, dance, music, theater, photography, films, webinars and others organized in and around schools by communities engaging with the very right holders of education we seek to protect.

Please submit your content to UniteToProtect@eaa.org.qa and upload them on your social media platforms using #UniteToProtect. We will get in touch if your submitted content is selected for a high-level event to mark the first observance on the 9th of September.
