Doha, Qatar 19 July, 2016:Reach Out To Asia's (ROTA’s) annual Ramadan Project offers volunteers and members of the local community the opportunity to take part in a series of engaging and rewarding activities designed to contribute to community development in Qatar. This year’s theme, ‘10 Years of Service’, marked a decade of support and commitment to members of the local community in Qatar through activities that connect volunteers with the wider community and the true spirit of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

Commenting on ROTA’s Ramadan initiative, Essa Al Mannai, Executive Director of ROTA, said: “The 2016 Ramadan Project has become an iconic annual project that focuses on serving local communities in Qatar. We’re very pleased with the outcomes of this year’s project and I would like to express my gratitude toall our volunteers, who generously gave their time for the greater good of the community. The Holy Month of Ramadan is a unique opportunity to demonstrate the importance of voluntary work”.

Marking its fifth year as a key sponsor of ROTA’s Ramadan 2016 Project, Occidental Petroleum Corporation (OXY) Qatar sponsored the distribution of bulk groceries to the local community. Additional food items were supplied by the Government Tender Committee, and shopping vouchers were provided to beneficiary families to purchase other products from Al Rawabi Food Center outlets. Oxy Qataralso sponsored the many Iftars hosted by ROTA during the Holy Month of Ramadan with the aim of implementing ROTA’s variouscommunity service initiatives.

Stephen Kelly, President and General Manager of Occidental Petroleum of Qatar Ltd, said:   “It’s a privilege to support ROTA once again in its annual Ramadan Project. One of the focus areas of Oxy Qatar’s social responsibility programme is to engage and enable individuals to actively contribute to the development of communities in Qatar. Our partnership with ROTA exemplifies this commitment. On behalf of Oxy Qatar, we thank all the people who worked very hard to make this year’s 2016 Ramadan Project a successful and meaningful event.”

One of the activities included ROTA volunteers hosting an Iftar for municipality workers living in the Al Shamal Municipality. This gave volunteers an opportunity to interact with different communities in Qatar, and to build a platform for increased interaction between cultures. Furthermore, an Iftar for municipality workers living in Al Khor was delivered by 25 ROTA volunteers who enjoyed a meal and conversation with more than 40 men from a variety of countries.

More than 100 local volunteers gathered to pack and distribute bulk groceries which benefited more than 200 families in need across Qatar, while volunteers worked together to provide a new computer lab for the Bangladesh MHM School in Abu Hamour.

ROTA volunteers visited Rumailah Hospital’s Residential Care Compound For the sixth consecutive year, and shared Iftar with patients as part of their Ramadan 2016 outreach initiative.

Towards the end of Ramadan, ROTA held an Iftar for the volunteers who took part in the ROTA Ramadan 2016 Project to recognise and celebrate their commitment to serving the wider community in Qatar. During the event, 250 volunteers were praised for their dedication and hard work in participating in the month-long programme of community service activities.

As a member of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF), ROTA believes in the importance of developing human capacity, and its Ramadan initiative aims to raise local awareness of the value of volunteerism and community service.
