ROTA Ramadan 2010 Project Begins!
Following the success of the past three years, Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) has begun preparations for this year's Ramadan Project by packing groceries for distribution to 100 families in need. For the second year, this activity took place at the Amna Bint Wahab Independent Secondary School for Girls, and was carried out by an enthusiastic and diverse group of committed ROTA volunteers.
"ROTA Ramadan project offers the opportunity to our volunteers to make a positive difference in the lives of members of the local community in Doha who are in need during the holy month of Ramadan. This year, we are strengthening the educational focus of our activities in order to maximize the impact on both our beneficiaries and volunteers" commented George Tavola, Head of ROTA Volunteer Program.
For the distribution of groceries, Reach Out To Asia has partnered with the Qatar Diabetes Association (QDA), who kindly provided Information Education Communication (IEC) materials to be distributed with the food items. Given that the International Diabetes Federation ranks Qatar fifth globally in terms of the proportion of people aged 20 to 79 with diabetes, these materials aim to raise awareness about diabetes as well as how to have healthy eating habits, especially during Ramadan.
"Qatar Diabetes Association is participating in this program organized by ROTA to achieve the mission both centers look to reach towards the society. QDA participates in order to raise awareness about diabetes during Ramadan and how to control the blood sugar levels through following a healthy diet and lifestyle. Within this program, the team of QDA will be giving answers to the important questions of the families and also will distribute useful brochures about Ramadan and diabetes.", said Dr. Abdullah Al Hamaq, Executive Director of Qatar Diabetes Association.
"QDA's pioneering work directly supports Qatar Foundation's ongoing commitment to improving quality of life through progressive education and health and community services.", he added.
In providing opportunities to volunteers to reach out to their local communities, this year's Ramadan project aims to benefit approximately 700 individuals through various activities such as visits to community based institutions where volunteers and beneficiaries will share Iftar; Garangaou activities at different hospitals; and a house renovation project in partnership with home fashion store, THE One.
