- Trip demonstrates ROTA’s support for International Women’s Day
Demonstrating Reach Out To Asia’s (ROTA) and Vodafone-Qatar commitment to support International Women’s Day, 15 female volunteers from three independent girl’s secondary schools left Doha this weekend to visit the ROTA-funded Monithapana Khsach Kandal General High School in Kandal Province, Cambodia.
Inaugurated in 2011, the ROTA-funded Monithapana Khsach Kandal General High School provides invaluable access to primary and secondary education for 2,750 children, as well as up-to-date technical skills for Cambodia’s youth.
In collaboration with Cambodian partner the Monithapana Foundation and under the sponsorship of Vodafone -Qatar, ROTA is sending the all-female volunteer group from Al Bayan Independent Secondary School for Girls, Al Sailiyah Independent Secondary School for Girls and Amna Bint Wahab Independent Secondary School for Girls on the 8-day visit accompanied by teachers, parent volunteers and a ROTA Volunteer Leadership Trainer.
“Visiting Cambodia gives the ROTA volunteers a wonderful opportunity to develop and enhance important life skills such as communication, empathy and interpersonal relationships. In addition they experience a ROTA project that delivers high quality, modern education in a safe learning environment for the young people of Kandal,” said ROTA Community Development manager Mr. Mohamed Abdullah Saleh.
Fostering academic exchange and understanding, during their visit the ROTA volunteers will present a series of peer-to-peer workshops designed to transfer skills and knowledge of the Arabic language, Qatari culture, internet/computer skills, healthy living and sports to Cambodian children and youth.
Providing this opportunity exclusively to young female volunteers was a strategic decision made to specifically respond to the needs of girls who could not previously participate in mixed-gender ROTA Student Volunteer Trips for cultural reasons. Furthermore, addressing challenges facing women through an activity that supported the call of International Women’s Day for equal access to education and training.
“We are delighted to be working with independent schools for girls who were unable to participate in previous mixed-gender ROTA volunteer trips to Cambodia” added Mr. Mohamed Saleh
After returning from Cambodia the volunteers will participate in a reflection event to share their experiences with others and identify a series of follow-up activities to maintain the ongoing relationship between the volunteers and the school in Cambodia.
