EAA Foundation Condems Abduction of 25 Schoolgirls in Nigeria

Calendar icon
Education Above All Foundation, a global foundation for education and development, strongly condemns the abduction of 25 schoolgirls by gunmen in Nigeria’s Kebbi State.

The targeted attack on the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, which also resulted in the fatal shooting of the school principal, is the latest in a series of abduction attacks confronting the Nigerian education system.

This incident comes just days before the Fifth International Conference on the Safe Schools Declaration in Nairobi, Kenya. First adopted in Oslo in 2015, the declaration urges governments and stakeholders to protect students, teachers, and educational facilities during armed conflict by promoting commitments to prevent attacks on education and prevent the military use of schools.

"The deliberate targeting of schools, students and educators is an unacceptable violation of international law and human rights. Education is a lifeline for learners, not a target of violence. We call for the immediate release and safe return of the abducted students, and for renewed commitment from all parties to prevent such attacks in the future," said Maleiha Malik, the Executive Director of the Protect Education in Insecurity and Conflict (PEIC) Programme at the Education Above All Foundation.

Since the abduction of 276 girls from Chibok in 2014, more than 1,500 students have been kidnapped across Nigeria. This latest attack highlights the urgent need for strengthened protection measures to ensure every child can learn in safety.
