EAA Condemns Suspected Militant Bombing of School in South Waziristan in Pakistan
The Education Above All Foundation (EAA) unequivocally condemns the bombing of the Sofia Noor School in the area of Wana Tehsil in Pakistan’s South Waziristan on May 17. A valuable resource for girls in an underprivileged and remote area, the school has become one of several targets of militant attacks that have besieged the region since mid-2021.
While no casualties have been reported, the attack is a deplorable attempt to destroy education and learning at Sofia Noor School. It is the second of its kind this month and comes after a number of other attacks in the region, highlighting the danger that the enjoyment of the right to education exposes learners to.
Education is a cornerstone for building a civil society and protecting educational facilities, staff and students from attacks must continue to be a global priority. The targeting of educational institutions is unlawful and perpetrators of such attacks must be held accountable by the local and national authorities.
Cementing Pakistan’s efforts to educate current and future generations is of paramount importance, especially since the country has the second highest number of out-of-school children in the world, a number that is exacerbated by gender disparities. EAA’s global outreach continues to extend to Pakistan where partnerships between its Educate A Child and Integrated Social Protection Development Programmes seek to reduce the impact of poverty, gender discrimination, natural disasters, low quality education, and geographic disparities. These programmes work to strengthen the provision of quality education and resilience through alternative and innovative learning methods.
