Fakhoora junior and senior students competed with 70 other creative business ideas, and carried out two business ideas of their own at Startup Weekend in Gaza, a platform that encourages young Gazans to collaborate in projects preparing them for entrepreneurship.

Held over the second Weekend of October 2015, twenty-nine teams worked over the course of three days to develop a business idea that consisted of a demo, a business plan, and a presentation to showcase to a panel of business professionals. A total of 11 Fakhoora Dynamic Futures students teamed up for the first time, working harmoniously on two distinct business ideas.

Ahmad AlQeeq, a computer engineering alumni, led the development of the first idea. “The idea is a mobile app, called ‘Feed Me’, a user-friend app that builds a database for restaurants, their locations and their menus; people can set dates, time and their orders before they reach the restaurants.  This idea is completely developed by Fakhoora students who decided to work as a team, gathering different capacities from IT, marketing, Graphic Design, film, and business planning. The mix of junior and senior students highlighted a passion towards creativity and entrepreneurship,” said AlQeeq.

“Keep it”, is a mobile app that markets second hand products to potential customers and hopes to encourage people to keep their old products and sell them online.  “Working with other Fakhoora students is very interesting, we feel like one family, qualifying from the first to the second stage is a win it itself,” said Batool Daban, a junior student in computer systems engineering.

Haneen Shahwan, studying computer engineering, joined her fellow university classmates to develop a mobile called “My Day” that organizes daily budgets. She said that “as Fakhoora posted about this event on Facebook, I applied and urged my friends to apply, as we qualified for the second stage, we continued to work as a team, I find it a great challenge and learning journey.”

The Fakhoora team won the best demo design. Dalal Azeez, a Fakhoora student, was been offered  free access to online training in social enterprise building with an International mentor. Haneen Shahwan and her team placed third.

“I cannot have a better feeling, this is my first participation, I feel honored being a winner.  These three days were a great learning experience, I think this is a great example of how we can move from just looking for jobs to creating our own businesses.  I will work to develop this app, and hopefully we can make business out of it,” said Haneen.
