ROTA employees pledge one day's salary for victims of war in Gaza
Over 20 employees of Qatar-based NGO Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) have pledged one day's salary as humanitarian aid to the devastated victims of the conflict in the Gaza Strip. More than 660 Palestinians have been reported killed, including 215 children, and over 3,000 injured in the war which began on December 27, 2008.
The gesture, which reiterates ROTA's support to the victims of the war, comes close on the heels of their pledge to donate US$ 1 million in relief aid to Gaza only two days after the crisis began. The salary contribution will be handed over as part of ROTA's relief funds in collaboration with its local partners in the Gaza Strip.
Marwa Al-Awadi, Executive Coordinator at ROTA, said: "A humanitarian catastrophe looms over Gaza and urgent relief assistance to those affected by the assault is the need of the hour. As a token of solidarity, ROTA employees have decided to donate one day's salary to help those who have been rendered homeless, injured and impoverished due to the ongoing conflict. I hope that other organizations will follow our example, because something relatively small for us, might be of life-saving value for others."
ROTA is currently spearheading its relief operations in Gaza in close cooperation with other NGOs. ROTA's Emergency Response Delegation, consisting of ROTA Director and two more ROTA representatives, is in Egypt to oversee the delivery of the relief supplies including logistical arrangements and coordination.
