EMPOWER 2011 to mobilize Qatar's youth to Lead, Serve and Advocate for Change

Reach Out To Asia (ROTA) is hosting its 3rd annual 'EMPOWER' National Youth Conference on Personal Leadership, Service Learning and Global Citizenship (EMPOWER 2011) from Thursday 14 to Saturday 16 April at the newly opened Qatar Foundation Student Centre in Education City.

Driven by the mission of 'mobilising Qatar's youth to Lead, Serve and Advocate for Change',  ROTA is set to amass u p to 350 dynamic and active young citizens aged 14-24 years old and key youth educators across Qatar, to their 3 day interactive, and vibrant youth led conference.   "EMPOWER 2011 supports ROTA's strategy to engage youth as leaders in defining and advocating innovative solutions to education and development challenges. The conference provides a platform for the youth to contribute to the Qatar National Vision 2030, by serving as responsible citizens in Qatar and the global community," said ROTA Director Essa Al Mannai.

Lectures and workshops at EMPOWER 2011 aim to raise awareness, increase knowledge and build the capacity of young people in Qatar in three key areas: Personal Leadership, Service Learning and Global Citizenship.

Personal Leadership will empower delegates to achieve personal excellence by setting goals and forward planning, establishing personal mission statements, marketing their skills and abilities, and maintaining a positive attitude and healthy self esteem.

EMPOWER 2011's Service Learning message is to promote civic responsibility by emphasizing the importance of duty to country, community and the wider world by valuing diversity, developing empathy alongside the desire to help the vulnerable and to protect heritage and the environment.

Global Citizenship will focus on creating a platform to promote the voice of youth using social media, on topical global social justice issues, such as poverty, international education, environment, youth development, climate change and more.

"With speakers reflecting the event's student delegate profile, we expect EMPOWER 2011 to inspire, inform and mobilise the youth of Qatar to act on the conference themes of leadership, service learning and global citizenship," says ROTA Community Development Manager Mohammed Abdulla Saleh.

The EMPOWER 2011 program is scheduled to include 12 workshops sessions and two teacher seminars, divided into two sets of six or seven workshop sessions running concurrently to allow each delegate to attend their choice of two workshops throughout the conference.

One EMPOWER 2011 goal is to showcase the activities and efforts of the growing number of ROTA Youth Service Clubs, as well as creating a platform for a larger number of students to learn and engage in ROTA's youth development program in Qatar.

In addition to 300 student delegates, EMPOWER 2011 expects to attract 50 adult observers and contributors representing secondary school teachers, university Student Affairs Officers, local youth groups/organizations and government ministries.
