A New Expertise in Gaza; Mohammed Habboub and GIS
Mohammed Habboub, 26, living in Gaza city, has finished his studies in Civil Engineering from the Islamic University of Gaza. Mohammed has applied for Al Fakhoora Dynamic Futures Program for the International Masters, showing an outstanding need for Gaza and the world that a Technical Specialist in the particular field of Geographical Information Sciences is highly needed.
Later on, Mohammed worked his life through as a Junior Lecturer in the University College of Applied Sciences, tutoring Geographical Information Systems for Diploma students. He had the opportunity to present his case study to the students, whose study was centered on the fact that Gaza lacks the development expertise in Geographical Information Systems and Geographical Positioning Systems. He says: “Yet information-wise, we need to create, manage and develop Information Systems before applying GPS”.
Studying in the University of Nottingham in the UK, Mohammed achieved distinction in his studies and was valedictorian in the Civil Engineering department, which includes his concentration in GIS and surveying.
Mohammed says: “Actually, what I have studied is of an extraordinary need for Gaza, especially after the Israeli military operation on Gaza in July/August, 2014. I have learned several tools, approaches and techniques out of which a technique could be initiated to ease the surveying work of how to do professional mapping for destroyed areas using advanced technologies, which again- we are missing in Gaza!”
After returning home, he was promoted to Senior Lecturer- teaching Geographical Information Systems to Undergraduate students. “I am still wishing to be a systems development practitioner. I am looking forward to the right opportunity soon and I think, Gaza will have a great jump in Geographical Information Systems.” Mohammed adds.
“In fact, what I had is a remarkable chance. There were no such scholarships in Gaza that offer support for this field, and I am very glad for Al Fakhoora and I will persevere to devote my expertise to the development in Gaza.” Mohammed concludes.
