Flotilla II is now assembled and ready for the trip to Gaza, but with political hesitation and abandonment, there are problems to overcome first.

Following the tragic deaths of several people aboard the ‘Mavi Marmara’ in 2010, the determination of this time successfully breaking through the blockade and delivering much needed aid, is high.

While the previous Gaza flotilla garnered much media attention, it wasn’t the most positive and insightful coverage. With allegations flying on both sides, there was frantic media coverage and a lack of calm and informative eye-witness accounts, which led to an explosive situation.

The Turkish government, despite unwavering support to the last flotilla, have now withdrawn, citing ‘technical difficulties’ as the reason, and Greece have followed suit, even intercepting several would-be flotillas and training in tandem with IDF helicopters.

Despite the flotilla remaining docked for now, the pause may have allowed the world media to focus in more depth upon the intentions and objectives of this operation.

Media crews now have the ability to interview a vast body of vocal activists, rather than the weary and shell-shocked previous activist body who were questioned following the hostile boarding of their flotilla and containment by IDF forces.

What’s more, these activists are shown to be from all walks of life, corners of the globe, religious beliefs and various cultural and political backgrounds. It’s hoped that this variety of commentary should lead to a more measured and fairer coverage of events. Among the activists is holocaust survivor, and long time Palestinian activist, Hedy Epstien. Along with her on the flotilla are a number of other Jewish activists.

Commentators are also noting the incredible impact that Israel has on the policies of other countries, with Greece and Turkish Prime Ministers adding their support without question.

While people could argue about Israel’s right to control the water close to them, pro-flotilla activists and commentators hope the opinion that stopping an activist group that represents no threat to Israel’s sovereignty so far off its shores will be as readily accepted.

While no movement of the flotilla has taken place and aid has not yet arrived in Gaza, the discussions surrounding the flotilla are helping better understanding all around, which can only be good.
