By taking this step towards sustainability and working with new partners, the Aluno interventions and lessons learned will achieve broader replication and scale.

It is with great pleasure that Educate A Child announces that Aluno Presente, a co-funded partner project with Associação Cidade Escola Aprendiz, has catalysed sponsorship with the British Council and the London School of Economics. By taking this step towards sustainability and working with new partners, the Aluno interventions and lessons learned will achieve broader replication and scale. Ultimately, impacting, enrolling and retaining more OOSC in Brazil into quality primary education.

In April 2013, EAC and Aprendiz began implementing the Aluno Presente project with the express intention of reaching OOSC in Rio de Janeiro’s favelas wherein illiteracy, age-grade disparities and dropout rates are alarmingly high. To date, Aprendiz has enrolled nearly 11,000 OOSC utilising an intensive outreach model that works closely with community stakeholders to identify, enrol and track OOSC over time. Further, Aprendiz uses data for decision making, contributing to broader policy discussions on OOSC.

Through governmental collaboration, community engagement and targeted outreach, Aluno Presente has had a sizeable impact on the future prospects of thousands of children. Going forward, the project aims to share the inter-sectoral methodology employed to overcome the access barriers to education facing Rio’s OOSC. Moreover, Aluno’s training programme and online-learning platform will serve to consolidate the knowledge produced concerning social policy and vulnerable children.

Educate A Child is truly grateful for Aprendiz’s partnership and efforts to keep the promise that all children realise their right to an education and their ongoing commitment to sustain an excellent programme.
