EAC Attends the CIES Conference on ‘Problematizing (In) Equality’
‘EAC and its partners are providing primary education to almost 7 million formerly out of school children, but there are so many millions more who deserve the opportunity to learn’, said Dr Mary Joy Pigozzi, Executive Director of Educate A Child (EAC), during a panel discussion at the 2017 Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) annual meeting. The 'Problematizing (In) Equality: The Promise of Comparative and International Education' Conference took place from 5-9 March in Atlanta, Georgia and sought to discuss perhaps the most pressing challenge facing education today and marginalized children all over the world – inequality.
Over the course of a five-day period in Atlanta, the CIES Conference treated diverse and salient subjects, such as issues facing immigrant students in the U.S.; evolving the necessary competencies through education in the 21st century; development and innovation; and reaching vulnerable and excluded out of school children (OOSC). This conference convened an impressive cadre of education stakeholders, including Open Society Foundations, UNESCO, the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Results for Development Institute, Columbia University’s Teachers College and Education Above All/Educate A Child.
At the conference, EAC led the ‘Acting Differently to Make a Difference’ poster session, outlining the organisation’s guiding principles and key achievements; and also chaired the panel discussions on ‘Out of School Children – Who They Are, Why They’re Excluded and How They Can Be Reached: Experience from Educate A Child, Qatar’ and ‘Diversifying Educational Opportunities to Ensure Inclusion for the Most Marginalized’.
‘The CIES Conference was an excellent opportunity for different education sector stakeholders to assemble, share experiences and learn from each other, so we, and the people we serve through education, are all ultimately better for it. I am proud that we had a chance to represent our work here’, remarked Dr Pigozzi at the event’s conclusion.
