Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

Zero Out of School Children in The Gambia

Education Above All, through its global programme, Educate A Child, partnered with UNICEF in The Gambia to enroll and retain 66,765 out of school children and adolescents in quality primary education. The goal of this project is to ensure that all the remaining OOSC in The Gambia are enrolled to quality primary education and thus helping the country get to achieve Zero Out of School Children (OOSC).

The project will employ several strategic interventions such as community engagement and social behavior change to drive demand for education services, cash transfer programs both as an incentive and to ease financial burdens, and the provision of bicycles to students who have distances to school to enhance attendance. Furthermore, there will be collaboration across different ministries to identify, enroll and monitor the country’s hardest-to-reach OOSC.  To enhance access, construction of new disability-friendly classrooms and gender-sensitive toilets will be undertaken. Quality improvement will be achieved through increased teacher supply, targeted teacher training as we all as the provision of necessary learning materials.  This project will also provide a second chance to the overaged children who may have missed an opportunity to be in primary education by offering them a non-formal alternative learning programme that leads to certification and/or transition to upper primary school.
