Opening up a world of education

Children love to learn. If they are denied access to knowledge, we also deny them the opportunity to change their lives for the better.

Support for Children At-Risk of Dropping out of Primary Education in Malawi

Over the course of four years, this project will aim to reach 36,050 children at "high risk" and "most at risk" of dropout, as well as 4,000 OOSC. It will focus on rural districts in Malawi, where schools are chronically under-resourced, and levels of multi-dimensional poverty and disadvantage are profound. The project will target children who are most vulnerable to critical risk factors such as severe multi-dimensional poverty, gender, disability, orphan status, and wider household situation, i.e., those at high risk” of drop out. Those “most at risk” will then be identified by additional warning signs, including changes in behaviour, attendance and engagement at school. The project will respond to these complex challenges through a holistic, multi-dimensional and community-led approach that comprise:

  • Direct material support for all high-risk" children, specific to their needs;
  • Capacity building for school, community and district stakeholders to create safer and more responsive learning environments and improve attendance through school-led action planning;
  • Psycho-social support to promote children's engagement; and in particular help girls manage psychosocial challenges;
  • Life-skills and wellbeing sessions; and
  • Intensive out of school support for those facing the most pressure to drop out.

The project will capitalise on the experience and expertise of the CAMFED Association, young women from backgrounds of rural poverty who have completed school through CAMFED’s programme and share a deep commitment to ‘plowing back’ the benefits of their education into their communities.
