Dignitas and EAA Foundations' Internet Free Education Resource Bank
Project Status
To support education among marginalised children living in informal urban settlements, Dignitas partnered with Education Above All Foundation to pilot the Internet-Free Education Resource Bank (IFERB), designed for learners in low-resource households.
Phase I (2020):
The three-month pilot took place in the informal settlements of Kawangware, Dandora, and Mathare in Nairobi County. A team of 61 carefully selected teachers implemented nine contextualised projects, supported by audio scripts to address low literacy levels among parents and guardians. Each teacher worked with an average of 20 households. While 68% of families accessed content through WhatsApp, others relied on hard copies. Learning combined WhatsApp delivery with in-person and phone call interactions, with teachers providing daily support to parents and learners.
Phase II (2021):
From July to December 2021, the second phase expanded to 30 schools in Nairobi, reaching 2,522 learners in Grades 4-7. Building on Phase I, the program introduced 12 contextualised projects co-developed with EAA Foundation. Eighty-eight teachers were trained to integrate IFERB resources into regular school lessons. Through these projects, learners enhanced creativity and problem-solving for example, developing comic books and stories, and finding innovative solutions to environmental challenges such as reusing plastic waste.
