EAA Welcomes ICJ Decision as an Essential Step to Guarantee Humanitarian Aid to Gaza

Urgent protection of education for children and youth remains a top priority

Education Above All (EAA) Foundation, a global champion for education, providing education services in Gaza since 2009, welcomes the recent decision by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the Request for the indication of Provisional Measures by the Republic of South Africa against Israel (Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel)). This decision represents a crucial step in ensuring humanitarian aid to Gaza and safeguarding the rights of Palestinians, particularly children, affected by the ongoing conflict.

EAA Foundation supports the ICJ's call for parties concerned to take immediate measures to prevent acts falling under the Genocide Convention, including the deliberate infliction of harm and conditions of life aimed at physical destruction. Importantly, the order urges parties concerned to facilitate the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the challenging conditions faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

In this regard, EAA reiterates its calls for an immediate ceasefire to protect all civilians, and to guarantee safety and shelter for civilians and children sheltering in schools. The urgent protection of education for children and youth in Gaza remains a top priority for EAA Foundation in these challenging times.

Al Fakhoora Programme, under the EAA Foundation, has been a longstanding provider of education and other essential services for children and youth in Gaza. In response to the present war, EAA has collaborated with local and international organizations, including UN agencies, to support over 233,000 children and youth with a US$9 million humanitarian intervention. This includes mental health assistance, emergency education, hygiene kits, community-led initiatives, food security, and scholarships for Palestinian youth.

“Mr. Talal Al Hothal, Director of EAA's Al Fakhoora Programme, said, "Parties concerned must comply with the ICJ's order, and States parties to the Convention have an obligation to ensure adherence. This is particularly crucial in preventing acts contrary to the order and facilitating compliance with the Genocide Convention."

EAA Foundation calls upon the international community to fulfill their obligations as States parties, advocate for an immediate ceasefire, and ensure humanitarian access to provide essential aid to the people of Gaza promptly.
