EAA Supports International Court of Justice’s Order to Halt Military Operations in Rafah
Education Above All Foundation has commended the International Court of Justice's (ICJ) recent Order on May 24, 2024, directing Israel to immediately cease its military operations in Rafah. This ruling is the latest in a series of ICJ orders following South Africa’s initial application against Israel, focusing on the ongoing war. It specifically mandates an immediate halt to military activities in Rafah to protect residents, including families and children, as well as infrastructure, from the impacts of the conflict.
The ICJ highlighted the immense risks posed by the military offensive in Rafah, noting the particularly perilous conditions for the approximately 600,000 Palestinian children currently taking shelter there. The Education Above All Foundation particularly notes this part of the order, underscoring its deep concern for the safety and well-being of children in these extreme conditions.
Since the war began on October 7, 2023, over 36,000 Palestinians have been killed. South Africa first filed an Application on December 29, 2023 alleging that Israel’s actions and omissions “are genocidal in character because they are intended to bring about the destruction of a substantial part of the Palestinian national, racial and ethnic group”.
Education Above All Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the protection and rights of children in conflict zones worldwide. We continue to monitor the situation closely and call upon the international community to join us in ensuring that these vulnerable populations are safeguarded under international law.
