Education in Conflict & Emergencies: Insights from Ukraine
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Education and Science, approximately 4.6 million children in Ukraine face barriers to education, while more than 600,000 remain out of school across the European Union.
Children are facing elevated levels of stress, anxiety, and trauma due to displacement, violence, and instability. For many children both in and outside of Ukraine, the war has erased more than two years of education, depriving them of their sense of normalcy. Refugee children, in particular, have reported feelings of alienation, stress, and language barriers, which further hinder their ability to adapt to new educational systems.
Education in Emergency (EiE) interventions ensure that Ukrainian children within and outside Ukraine can access quality education and tools to manage their socio-emotional well-being in a safe and supporting learning environment. EiE interventions include:
- Hybrid and remote learning models to address displacement and school closures;
- Language and integration support for refugee children in host communities;
- Socio-emotional learning (SEL) and trauma-informed education to help children cope with stress and build resilience;
- Reconstruction and rehabilitation of schools to restore safe learning spaces.
This webinar seeks to bring together stakeholders engaged in delivering quality education in emergency settings specific to Ukraine. The discussion will cover:
- What do we know? What are we doing? An overview of the current state of education in Ukraine, the ongoing EiE programs, and their impact.
- What’s working? Insights into successful strategies and the rationale behind innovative education delivery models.
- What have we learned from our projects? Are there gaps? Lessons learned from implementing EiE interventions and identifying areas that require further attention.
- What’s next? Priorities, best practices, partnerships? Key actions needed to strengthen EiE programming and improve outcomes for children.
