Qatar 2015 Donates 9 Million QAR to Educate A Child
During a handover ceremony which took place at the Hilton Hotel Doha, the Qatar 2015 Organizing Committee presented a cheque for 9 million Qatari Riyals to Educate A Child, fulfilling its pledge made in November 2014 to donate all ticket proceeds from the 24th Men’s Handball World Championship.
Dr. Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Director General, Qatar 2015, said: "one of the main objectives of the organizing committee was not to limit their work to only organizing the tournament but they ensure to support and develop different aspects aside from sports. Education was among our first priorities; especially as education and sports complement one another. Through supporting Educate A Child, the global programme of Education Above All, we believe in its mission and are honored to contribute to the education of children worldwide and advocate for their right to education.”
Commenting on the donation received, Marcio Barbosa, CEO of EAA, said: “Today is an important day because we demonstrated what can be achieved through cooperation between sports and education. The partnership between Educate A Child and Qatar 2015 will impact the lives of 25,000 children. We see this as a historical cooperation which will continue in the future”.
Educate A Child is active in more than 30 countries, working with strategic and implementing partners including UNRWA, UNESCO and UNICEF, as well as local organisations to help break though barriers that have been identified to hinder access to education. EAC has commitments in place to provide access to education for more than 5 million children, contributing to closing the out of school children gap worldwide.
